WCAG Contrast Requirements Explained

What is WCAG contrast ratio?

WCAG requires a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt or 14pt bold). AAA requires 7:1 and 4.5:1 respectively.

Why is color contrast important?

Good color contrast ensures your content is readable by users with visual impairments, including low vision and color blindness. It's also a legal requirement in many countries.

What is considered large text?

Large text is defined as 18pt (approximately 24px) or 14pt bold (approximately 18.5px). Larger text has lower contrast requirements.

Who needs accessible contrast?

Approximately 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have some form of color vision deficiency. Proper contrast benefits all users, especially in bright light conditions.
